In most of my work with students, I use the Orton-Gillingham methodology. Orton-Gillingham (O-G) is an approach to reading instruction that is multi-sensory, structural, and flexible. Through auditory, kinesthetic, and visual exercises, students learn to decode words and master the rules and generalizations that form the basis of English phonetics. It has proven to be especially effective at helping students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia and similar challenges.
Orton-Gillingham instructors are educators who have been trained and assessed in a variety of tools and techniques. I have completed O-G instructor training through Orton-Gillingham of Minnesota (OGMN). I also have served as a supervising teacher in OGMN’s training programs. I trained personally under pioneering Orton-Gillingham educators Arlene Sonday and Karen Sonday, and am a member of the OG Reading Specialists professional community for ongoing professional development.
